Clinic News
December 1997

These holiday pet care tips are provided by Dr. Mike Freeman, DVM and his staff at the Royal Highlands Animal Clinic, 10098 Royal Lane, Dallas, TX 75238, (214) 341-5298.

Winter Pet Care Tips

bulletCats are known to nap on warm car engines.  Knock on the hood and honk the horn before starting your car.
bulletAntifreeze will kill your pet.  Take necessary precautions to avoid exposure.
bulletKeep your dog on Heartworm preventatives year-round.
bulletProvide proper shelter for your pets and keep them dry and warm.
bulletBe sure your pet is properly fed.  Carlories are a source of energy for your pet.
bulletKeep fresh, clean water available at all times.  If the water is kept outdoors, protect it from freezing.
bulletImmediately remove any ice, salt and caked mud from your pet's paws and coat.
bulletKeep alcoholic beverages and chocolate candy away from your pet.

Stress Reducers

Even friendly visits by friends and relatives can cause stress for your pet.  Make sure your pet has a quiet place to go for peace and quiet away from guests.  When the visitors leave, spend quiet time with your pet.   Stroking a dog or cat's back can be a great stress reducer.

Chocolate for your pet?  Never!

Keep candy away from your pets!  The following amounts of chocolate are considered very dangerous for animals:

5 lbs
Yorkie
4 regular candy bars
10 lbs
Min. Poodle
10 oz - 1 jumbo candy bar
25 lbs
Cocker
2 or more jumbo candy bars
50 lbs
Dalmation
2 lbs of chocolate pieces
75 lbs
German Shepherd
75 oz or 10 jumbo candy bars

Thyroid Symptoms

The clinical signs of hypothyroidism can be a loss of hair often on the tail that is not a result of scratching.  Other indications include dry scaly skin, dull brittle hair, bleaching of the hair coat and possibly the development of oily skin.  Advanced cases of hypothyroidism may cause your dog to become lethargic and overweight, even on a limited diet.  Your pet may not want to exercise, may seek out warm places and may have cold clammy skin.  Breeding dogs may have a lack of libido, prolonged anestrus or shortened estrus.  A blood test will be done to help confirm the diagnosis of hypothyroidism.  Medication can be given and improvement should be seen in about a month.

Blood Testing Before Survery?  Yes!

Your pet cannot describe symptoms to let us know about problems.  Blood chemistry tests provide a look at the function of the liver and kidneys.  These organs process and rid the body of medications used during surgery and anesthesia.
